Checklist on Planning a Funeral

Planning a funeral can be a daunting task, especially amidst the emotional challenges of losing a loved one. Having a checklist can help streamline the process and ensure that nothing important is overlooked during this sensitive time.

1. Consult with Family and Close Friends: Begin by discussing the wishes of your loved one, if known, and gather input from immediate family members and close friends. Understanding their preferences regarding burial or cremation, type of service, and any specific cultural or religious customs is crucial.

2. Choose a Funeral Home: Select a funeral home that aligns with your needs and budget. Consider factors such as location, services offered, and their experience in handling ceremonies according to your cultural or religious practices.

3. Connect with a celebrant, clergy or someone who you decide will lead the ceremony. (If having one)

4. Notify Relevant Parties: Inform key individuals and organisations about the death, including employers, banks, and insurance companies. Obtain multiple copies of the death certificate as these will be necessary for various administrative purposes.

5. Decide on Service Details: Determine the type of service (religious, secular, or themed), location (funeral home, place of worship, venue or elsewhere).

6. Select Funeral Products and Services: Choose caskets, urns, floral arrangements, and any other necessary items. Discuss options for memorialization such as keepsakes or charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

7. Plan Reception or Gathering: Decide whether to host a reception or gathering after the service and arrange for catering, if applicable. This provides an opportunity for everyone to come together and share memories.

8. Prepare Death Notice and Order of Service Program: Write an Death Notice to announce your loved ones passing and provide information about the service.  (This can be for the Newspaper or social media depending on how you choose to share the news).   Liase with your celebrant to create a program outlining the order of events and any readings or musical selections. (if having one)

9. Consider Aftercare: Explore grief support services for yourself and other family members. Understand the legal and financial obligations that may arise following the funeral.

10. Have a day to rest before the funeral:  If possible, try to ensure that you have a day to rest and recharge before the funeral.   And on the day of the funeral, make sure to eat something.

By following a list like this, you can navigate the funeral planning process with greater ease and ensure that the final farewell honours the memory of your loved one in a meaningful way.
